Top 100 American Goalkeepers - February 2016

The top 100 is back after a four month absence. To be honest, this is my least favorite time to put out the rankings because the offseason means a lot for players playing in the US. We saw a number of goalkeepers come in much better shape (and some worse) from where they left off the season before. The upcoming spring is a great time to view the product of a goalkeeper's winter. Looking back at last spring, you'll see a number of goalkeepers moving up and down. But we still have a few goalkeepers to introduce into the top 100.

Richard Sanchez (24)
Brendan Moore (51)
Jesse Gonzalez (76)
Scott Krotee (81)

I put both Sanchez and Gonzalez in the list, despite the dual nationals being more likely to play for Mexico over the US. Since we never really know how it's going to play out, we'll leave them in there for now. Brendan Moore is finally back on the field and Scott Krotee is keeping sharp by playing some indoor. Alex Bono (96) returns for the first time since August 2014. Trey Mitchell (90) and Dom DiMaggio (100) slide back into the group after just a few months of being left out.

Top U24 USMNT Prospects

USMNT Prospects returns as well. Remember the rankings takes current and potential into account, so it inevitably will lean towards the older goalkeepers. Goalkeepers must be under 24 to be on the list.

1. Richard Sanchez (Tigres UANL / Mexico.1) - 21.8
2. Ethan Horvath (Molde FK / Norway.1) - 20.7
3. Jon Kempin (Sporting Kansas City / USA.1) - 22.8
4. Jesse Gonzalez (FC Dallas / USA.1) - 20.8
5. Brian Sylvestre (Carolina RailHawks / USA.3) - 23.2
6. John McCarthy (Philadelphia Union / USA.1) - 23.6
7. Brendan Moore (Fleetwood Town / England.3) - 23.8
8. Alex Bono (Toronto FC / USA.1) - 21.8
9. Adam Grinwis (Rochester Rhinos / USA.3) - 23.8
10. Zack Steffen (SC Freiburg / Germany.1) - 20.8
11. Charlie Lyon (Seattle Sounders / USA.1) - 23.8
12. Cody Cropper (MK Dons / England.2) - 23

The race for the Mexican-American goalkeepers is definitely one for the future. Sanchez would have to file a one-time switch but it's not unheard of. Almost all of the American-based goalkeepers have some stiff competition for playing time so this spring is certainly important for them to get a foothold. The prospects list will be graduating out Moore, Grinwis, and Lyon by the time the next release rolls around.

13. Zach Bennett (Free Agent / None) - 22.2
14. Devin Perales (Rio Grande Valley FC / USA.3) - 22.8
15. Austin Rogers (Besa Kavajë / Albania.2) - 20.5
16. Eric Klenofsky (Monmouth / USA.N) - 21.4
17. Tyler Miller (Seattle Sounders II / USA.3) - 22.9
18. Paul Blanchette (Free Agent / None) - 21.8
19. Jake Feener (Tulsa Roughnecks / USA.3) - 23.8
20. Spencer Richey (Vancouver Whitecaps II / USA.3) - 23.8
21. Matt Bersano (Free Agent / None) - 23.4
22. Keith Cardona (Indy Eleven / USA.2) - 23.3
23. Jeff Caldwell (Virginia / USA.N) - 20
24. Andrew Tarbell (San Jose Earthquakes / USA.1) - 22.3

Feener and Richey get one last run on the prospect list while Bennett (trailing with Chicago), Blanchette (Arizona) and Bersano (Seattle) are all trying to find a club at the moment. Devin Perales stayed in state after Austin Aztex folded and Keith Cardona will be joined by Jon Busch this season.

The Best of the Rest

Top 100 American Goalkeepers - October 2015

Photo by Adam Hunger, USA TODAY Sports

It's been all-USMNT or USYNT these past couple months but we do have three newcomers for the Top 100!

Andre Rawls (81)
Alex Riggs (88)
Ethan Horvath (91)

Technically both Riggs and Horvath are returnees but they haven't been in the top 100 since 2013, when the list wasn't truly filled out. (See the complete history here.) Truth be told I thought Riggs had retired so it's good to see him back in the fold with St. Louis FC. Of course we are all familiar with Horvath's latest exploits with Molde. It was really only a matter of time to see him here. The last name, Rawls, was a pleasant surprise to see him excel with the Wilmington Hammerheads. I had written him off coming out of college as someone too old to develop anymore but he has continued to improve in goal. I don't know if I'd say he's a feasible option for New York City FC (they drafted Rawls in January) but he definitely is more now than he was a year ago.

For more goalkeeper rankings, check out the 24 Goalkeepers Under 24.

1. Brad Guzan (Aston Villa / England.1) - 77.8 (31.1)
2. Tim Howard (Everton FC / England.1) - 75.9 (36.6)
3. Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders / USA.1) - 69.8 (29.5)
4. Luis Robles (New York Red Bulls / USA.1) - 69.2 (31.4)
5. Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake / USA.1) - 68.9 (36.3)
6. Tyler Deric (Houston Dynamo / USA.1) - 68.8 (27.2)
7. Bill Hamid (DC United / USA.1) - 68.8 (24.9)
8. Andrew Dykstra (DC United / USA.1) - 68.6 (29.8)
9. Tim Melia (Sporting Kansas City / USA.1) - 68.5 (28.6)
10. William Yarbrough (Leon / Mexico.1) - 68.5 (26.6)

Taking a closer look at the top ten, some are calling for Howard to start back over Guzan. The 3-2 loss to Mexico shouldn't be placed on Guzan's shoulders and Howard hasn't exactly been playing that great for Everton. Guzan, on the other hand, has been more than reliable for Aston Villa. Deric lands a notch over Hamid. Even Hamid has his own supporters to start for Klinsmann but he continues to lack the consistency to deserve the world class adjectives. Yarbrough stays at 10 despite being recently benched, which is more indicative of the problems goalkeepers 11-20 are having than his own.

11. Steve Clark (Columbus Crew / USA.1) - 68.4 (29.5)

Top 100 American Goalkeepers - August 2015

After a quiet summer, here's a top 100 with bonus content to make up for the time lost. First, there are four newcomers to the elite class.

Matt Perrella (88)
Kevin Corby (92)
Robby Gogatz (93)
Dom DiMaggio (98)

Rafael Diaz returns after a two year absence. The first top one hundred, actually. On the up-and-up, Tim Melia has jumped to the ten slot due to stellar play with Sporting Kansas City. If SKC doesn't want to hold onto the emerging veteran, he will most definitely have his options next year, both in and outside of MLS. Patrick McLain also sees a jump after putting himself into a position to win the USL Goalkeeper of the Year Award with Sacramento.

Clint Irwin, Jeff Attinella, Quentin Westberg, and Joe Bendik all slip down the list. Each of the four have struggled to find consistency this season, some doing so with more playing time than others. The most frustrating of the four is Joe Bendik's performance, who I had ranked at number seven coming into the year. He's slower and less sure of himself than a year ago so hopefully he can regain some confidence in Toronto.

Bonus part number one: I categorized each goalkeeper by their college to find out which conference has produced the most goalkeepers. If there was a transfer, I went with the last attended college. Of course not every goalkeeper went to college (12 of the 100 did not) and some are from DII and DIII schools, but that still leaves us with 79 goalkeepers.

If you want to check my work you can see it here, along with past rankings, glove choice, and favorite animal for each goalkeeper. Make sure to click the tab at the top "School".

Lastly, here's the top 50 goalkeepers under 24 years old that are not currently on the top 100 list. Think of this as a prospect list of goalkeepers that will most surely be on the top 100 at some point but aren't quite there. The ranking takes into account for potential as well as current ability, unlike the top 100 which is only current ability.

For the first ten, the additional number is a rough guess of how many months it will be until they're on the top 100. I only did it for the top ten as the following goalkeepers won't be there for a year or two. I thought about doing a specific post for this but it's fairly similar to the college preseason rankings so consider this as a reward for those of you who scrolled this far.

Top 100 American Goalkeepers - June 2015

cover photo from Seattle Sports

Barely made it for June! Whew. There's been some significant movement in the top 100 from two months ago so let's discuss the major changes.

Brad Friedel is officially out and Stefan Frei has taken over the number three slot. Of course this begs the question, "Why doesn't he get called up to the USMNT?" Only Jurgen Klinsmann can truly answer that but the most likely answer is that Frei doesn't have any upside; he's essentially in the peak of his career, unlike Bill Hamid or other USYNT products. Frei doesn't have the glamour and Klinsmann, it would appear, thinks that certain younger goalkeepers will eventually pass Frei in talent. This goes back to the debate of "How much does the national team develop a player?" Which I would argue very little. It makes less sense to call in a developing player, regardless of his ceiling, if he isn't the best option at the moment instead of just simply calling in the top players regardless of age. Perhaps Frei can earn a Camp Cupcake call up but even that seems unlikely. Still, he's number one with us (after Guzan and Howard, of course).

Then of course there's Steve Clark at number four, who I would have expected to take the number three slot if you asked me a year or even six months ago. Clark's Achilles heel is his consistency. We'll see great saves one moment then a facepalm the next. If he can cut out the problems, he'd make a run at MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, however if he can't we'll could be seeing him farther down the list.

Andrew Dykstra (+39), Chris Konopka (+38), and Brian Sylvestre (+41) all jumped up the list for their recent performances, Dykstra most notably of the three, landing at number nine. While Dykstra had a hell of an outing in Champions League early this year, he's rebounded with outstanding performances while filling in for Bill Hamid's absence. Which is the real Dykstra? Time will tell.

Joe Bendik continues to tumble down the list. It's a real shame considering he has all the tools to be a starter in MLS but can't seem to put it together. His 1v1 approach is all over the place and he seems to be a step behind too often. Still young, Bendik could rebound but I'm doubtful he'll ever get to his number six spot again.

Lower division goalkeepers that are really shining are Sacramento's Patrick McLain and New York Cosmos' Jimmy Maurer. McLain is looking to rejoin MLS but I could see Maurer staying with the NASL for the rest of his career if the money is right.

Daryl Sattler returns to the list for the first time since July 2013 and Jeremy Crumpton is back in the top 100 as well, last being seen here in March 2014. As for newcomers, there are quite a few! There's a link or highlight vid for each goalkeeper just so you can hold your own around the water cooler next Monday.

Charlie Lyon
Darius Motazed
Kris Devaux

Trey Mitchell

That's not all the big moves but those are most of them. You can check the history of the top 100 here to see the movement of each goalkeeper over time, including which goalkeepers use what brand of gloves, if you're into that sort of thing.
